Please note that the following scene descriptions are deliberately vague so as not to divulge the story ending.
The closing scene of the film is shot on a beach. The circumstance requires a beach which would be safe and sheltered for a boat pick up, and the boat is meant to be coming in from the ocean from the South Island to an undisclosed pick up point somewhere on the Wellington coast.
This Sandy Point location is ideal as it has a sheltered feel, but you can still see the sea spray from breaking waves on the horizon. It also is perfect for allowing people to get on an off a boat in a shallow location, it also has plenty of places for potential snipers to hide on the right hand side beach.
It also allows easy vehicle access.
The time of day the scene would be shot is dawn, so could be morning or evening. We went out on a beautifully calm evening allowing me to get a glimpse of "ideal" and I would aim to shoot in similar conditions and with similar light. Part of the look of the film which is developing is the shallow depth of field so the shots, particularly shot at that time of day would incorporate bokeh. The mood of the scene is fairly somber and therefore that blue hue really will enhance this.
Here's a video taken at the location at dusk showing the potential feel that could be achieved. The people in this video are stand-ins, assisting with the boat scene/handling.
The boat:
A friend has kindly offered the use of his boat, and it's just right for the scene. It can carry the correct number of people, and the seating arrangement works well for the scene too.
